Commercial Door Operators

PULSE 600: The evolution of springless technology
PULSE 600: The evolution of springless technology

When choosing an operator for a commercial overhead door, a very important consideration is whether the door is balanced or unbalanced.

A balanced door uses one or more torsion springs to counterbalance the weight of the door. This reduces the lifting force required from the operator, potentially allowing a smaller motor to be used. But this convenience comes with drawbacks. Springs are typically the first component to fail in a balanced system. A high‑quality operator, like from the iControls’ PULSE line, runs for a million cycles or more, while commercial torsion springs may last only 25,000 cycles depending on their quality. As springs fatigue, the door gradually becomes unbalanced, increasing wear, reducing performance and requiring regular service.

Commercial and industrial doors can also be designed without torsion springs. These springless systems have fewer moving parts and are ideal for applications where torsion hardware is impractical, such as folding, sliding or high‑speed fabric doors. In a springless setup, there is no counterbalance to assist with lifting. The operator must supply all the torque, which means the quality and durability of the operator are critical. This is where the new PULSE 600 from iControls delivers meaningful advantages.

The PULSE 600 is significantly more powerful than a typical commercial operator. It features a direct-drive 180V DC brake motor available in 1 ½, 2, 2 ½ and 3 horsepower-rated options. Combined with a gearbox optimized for the specific application’s desired speed, the PULSE 600 is engineered to operate springless doors reliably all day, every day.

Precise RPM‑based speed control is another key advantage. Instead of subjective speed settings like 1–5, the PULSE 600 allows users to select the exact RPM required for optimal performance. Opening speed, closing speed and the slow-speed portions of the cycle (used for soft-start/soft-stop functionality) can all be programmed for smooth and consistent operation. The available RPM range is dependent on gearbox ratio.

Universal Input Voltage is one of the most innovative features of the PULSE 600. The operator automatically adapts to a facility’s voltage, from 208–600Vac for three‑phase power or 208–240Vac for single‑phase power. This eliminates the need for stocking multiple voltage‑specific models or adding a step‑down transformer, reducing complexity and cost for any project.

With springless doors, the two forces acting on the door are gravity and the motor. Every PULSE 600 model includes an electromechanical brake motor that ensures the door stops exactly when commanded, greatly enhancing safety. An optional chain hoist is available for all configurations to provide manual operation during a power interruption.

The PULSE 600 is easy to wire and setup thanks to its intuitive floor‑level LCD control panel. It also features an electronic fully‑open sensor that removes the need for physical limits.

For any speed springless application, the PULSE 600 is the operator you need for powerful, safe, and efficient performance. Explore the full specs of the PULSE 600 or browse the rest of our PULSE lineup.

The PULSE 300 from iControls is built to do exactly that. It opens commercial or industrial doors with ease, but it also delivers a range of behind-the-scenes features that make it truly stand out. It really is the strong, silent type.

The Strong … The 90V direct-drive motor is powerful and capable of lifting heavy doors. The PULSE 300 is available in three different horsepower-rated options (1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP). Integrated 24V battery backup comes standard, ensuring your facility keeps moving even during a power outage.

Its innovative design and programming allow the PULSE 300 to open a door fast, reaching opening speeds of up to 24 inches per second.

The operator is also engineered to perform all day, every day. With unlimited continuous-duty operation, the PULSE 300 doesn’t need a break. There’s no need to purchase an additional extended-duty package to benefit from this capability; it comes standard.

The Silent … The PULSE 300 is an exceptionally quiet operator. The DC motor runs whisper-quiet, and with no chains or sprockets to add noise. The simple, clutter-free design makes installation a breeze and reduces maintenance costs.

Behind the scenes, several other features make the PULSE 300 stand out. Intelligent load sensing is also standard, helping maintain worker safety in every scenario.

The PULSE 300 can verify that your door is properly balanced, improving the longevity of both the door and its torsion springs. Programmable soft start and soft stop functionality ensure a smooth cycle every time. During initial setup, the PULSE 300 can also be optimized for rolling steel doors.

The PULSE 300 is the operator you want when you need a no-nonsense solution that simply gets the job done. Explore the full specs of the PULSE 300 or browse the rest of our PULSE lineup.

The all-new PULSE chain hoist now available
The all-new PULSE chain hoist now available

The PULSE chain hoist enhances reliability by enabling manual operation during extended power outages. Simple to use, it engages with a red cord and disengages with a green cord. An interlock switch ensures power to the operator is disconnected when the chain hoist is engaged.

This helps prevent downtime, protects operations, and provides peace of mind for businesses that require uninterrupted performance.

The PULSE chain hoist is simple, intuitive and ready when needed, giving users confidence that their doors will remain functional in any situation.

The PULSE chain hoist is available as an additional option for PULSE 200, PULSE 300, PULSE 400, and PULSE 600 commercial models.

When it comes to overhead commercial door operators, reliability is everything. Businesses and facilities depend on smooth uninterrupted performance even when the unexpected occurs. That is why the PULSE Chain Hoist option is such a valuable addition to the PULSE line of commercial door openers.

Most PULSE operators feature a standard integrated battery backup system that ensures operation during power interruptions. The optional PULSE Chain Hoist, available for the 200 and 300 Series, provides an extra layer of security allowing doors to be operated manually during extended power outages. The addition of a chain hoist also complies with architect specifications that do not account for battery backup.

The PULSE Chain Hoist is simple, intuitive and ready when needed, giving users confidence that their doors will remain functional in any situation.

Engaging and disengaging the chain hoist is straightforward, requiring only a quick pull of either of the two colour-coded cords. Pulling the red cord disengages the PULSE operator and activates the chain hoist. Pulling the red cord also disconnects power to the PULSE operator as an added safeguard should power return while the chain hoist is being used. Pulling the green cord re-engages the PULSE operator allowing for a resumption of normal operation.

The PULSE Chain Hoist is more than a convenience; it’s a safeguard that protects your facility’s commercial operations, eliminates downtime and ensures peace of mind.

PULSE intelligent force monitoring: enhancing commercial overhead door safety
PULSE intelligent force monitoring: enhancing commercial overhead door safety

All commercial overhead doors on the market today include some form of safety monitoring. Typically, this means a reflective or thru-beam photo-eye to detect obstructions while the door is closing. PULSE operators offer more to enhance safety.

Yes, all iControls PULSE door operators come equipped with either a polarized photo-eye or a thru-beam, depending on model. These safety components are mandated by UL and provide a good first line of defense but may not effectively prevent every incident.

For increased safety, PULSE operators (Series 100, 200 and 300) feature built-in intelligent force monitoring. This system continuously monitors the door while it is in motion and detects any abnormal force.

When closing, if the door encounters resistance or hits an obstruction, the operator halts and reverses direction. Should the door be obstructed during opening (ie. due to ice buildup, door latch engagement, door jam) this safety feature will stop the door to prevent further possible damage. This responsive action helps reduce the risk of harm and equipment damage. Force monitoring sensitivity is field adjustable for both opening and closing cycles

Intelligent force monitoring adds a valuable layer of protection for commercial doors using PULSE door openers. To learn more about their many safety and performance features, visit our PULSE commercial operators page.
